Neuroscience Initiative to Enhance Diversity (NIED)

A unique experience for undergraduates interested in a Ph.D. in the neurosciences

In collaboration with the Neuroscience graduate group and the Training Program in Basic Neurosciences, the Center for Neuroscience hosts the annual Neuroscience Initiative to Enhance Diversity (NIED) program. The NIED program aims encourages sophomore, junior and senior undergraduate students from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds to pursue a Ph.D. in the Neurosciences.

Over the course of two days, participants are involved in lab tours, workshops, poster sessions and mini-lectures. They have the opportunity to meet with faculty members and current graduate students in our program. The overall goal of this event is to help participants learn all about the doctoral degree, graduate school, the admissions process and what types of career options are possible with a Ph.D. in neuroscience. In addition, attendees partake in essential skill-building workshops that help in applying to competitive graduate programs. Workshops include mock interviews, how to identify and apply to graduate programs and how to write a personal statement.
