The research in this laboratory focuses on neurophysiological and genetic mechanisms in the CNS control of blood pressure and heart rate and how these mechanisms are altered during exercise, hypertension and heart failure. A related focus is on CNS control of breathing pattern and lung function, and how chronic exposure to environmental toxins, including allergens, passive cigarette smoke, and ozone induced neuroplasticity in the CNS region which affects breathing function. The laboratory utilizes electrophysiological approaches of single neuron recordings in vivo and whole-cell patch clamp recording in vitro, in addition to telemetry for monitoring blood pressure and heart rate in conscious freely moving mice, microinjection systems for making discrete injections of neuroactive agents in the CNS of conscious animals and real-time RT-PCR to measure changes in gene expression. Currently we are incorporating gene expression profiling to examine a wider array of genes that may be altered in the CNS during heart failure, hypertension and breathing abnormalities.
